A drone aircraft being used by European Union forces monitoring elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo has crashed in the capital, Kinshasa.

One woman was killed and two children injured when the remote-controlled drone came down on houses near to the capital's main stadium.

In July, another EU drone aircraft was shot down by gunfire from demonstrators, injuring eight people.

The 2,000 strong EU force is in DR Congo until the end of October.

"It was coming in to land when we lost contact with it. We don't know if it was a technical fault or if it was shot down like the last one," EUFOR's Lieutenant-Colonel Thierry Fusalba told Reuters news agency.

The final round of voting between President Joseph Kabila and former rebel chief Jean-Pierre Bemba is scheduled to take place on 29 October.

Kinshasa has been tense since several days of street battles in August followed the announcement of results after the first round of polls.
