A major search was launched after a drifting dinghy was spotted in the Cromarty Firth off Dingwall.

A RAF helicopter, coastguard teams, a lifeboat and a specialist mud search team scoured the area and coastline from midnight until 0400 BST.

The search was called off when it emerged a man had earlier swum half-a-mile ashore.

Police were keen to identify the man and appealed for information from anyone who helped him ashore.
