UK's oldest peer dies at age 98

Britain's oldest parliamentarian, Lord Renton, has died at the age of 98.

He was first elected in 1945 as an MP in Huntingdonshire for the National Liberal party, before standing as a Conservative until 1979.

He served in the Ministry of Fuel and Power and was a Home Office minister from 1961-62. When he resigned as an MP he was replaced by John Major.

He attended the House of Lords until July 2006 and was deputy speaker between 1982 and 1988.

A member of his household said he died at his home in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, with his family around him.

He was born in 1908 and educated at Oundle public school and University College, Oxford.

He served in World War Two, and trained as a lawyer, becoming a QC in 1954.

He was a life president of the Association of Conservative Peers from 2003.

Just before his 95th birthday, he passed his driving test on the first attempt.
