The puzzle will only to be solved with the help of residents on the Grange Park estate Det Supt Graham Gardner
Lancashire Police's Det Supt Graham Gardner, who is leading the inquiry, has made a fresh appeal for information on the killing.
He said: "We are now questioning three people in connection with the tragic death of young Sam Brown.
"But, as I have already said, they are just part of the jigsaw and I remain convinced that the puzzle will only be solved with the help of residents on the Grange Park estate.
"We need to know what happened in the early hours of Monday morning and we need to know Sam's movements in the hours leading up to his death.
"I do appeal to anyone who might have information to come forward."
Neighbours tried to resuscitate Sam, but he was already dead by the time paramedics arrived.
A student at St Mary's Catholic College, Sam was due to sit an English GCSE exam on Tuesday.
He had taken a part-time job in a supermarket and had planned to train as a plumber.
