The MoD spokesman said: "The Ministry of Defence deeply regrets to announce that a British soldier from 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment has died as a result of injuries sustained in a tragic accident at the British base in Sangin, Afghanistan.
"The circumstances of the accident will be the subject of an investigation and no further details will be released until that investigation is complete, but we can confirm that the soldier's death was not the result of enemy action."
