Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has filed a private prosecution against the head of the country's Criminal Investigations Department. Dr Besigye is accusing Elizabeth Kuteesa of misconduct over the investigation into rape charges against him before last year's elections. He was acquitted of the charges and the judge described the rape investigation as "crude and amateurish". Dr Besigye also faces treason charges, with the trial to resume on 4 June. He says the charges are political. Mrs Kuteesa is due to appear in court on 29 May to answer the charges. If found guilty, she could face a maximum combined prison sentence of 29 years. Dr Besigye accuses her of conspiracy to defeat justice, abduction of a witness and two counts of falsification of the police register. President Yoweri Museveni won a large election victory against Dr Besigye, whose challenge was rejected by the courts. Dr Besigye used to be Mr Museveni's personal doctor and the two men were allies in the guerrilla war which brought Mr Museveni to power. |
