Police hunting a potentially dangerous killer who absconded from an NHS residential home in Surrey say he is believed to have travelled into London.

Convicted murderer Lazslo Varga, 68, was last seen at Epsom railway station on Tuesday morning after leaving the mental health home in Haven Drive.

Mr Varga lived at Horton Haven under licence after being released from jail in 2005 following the murder in 1968.

He is believed to have caught a train either to Waterloo or Victoria.

But officers say it is possible he got off at an earlier station before arriving in London.

Police have released CCTV images of him taken at Epsom station at 0829 BST on Tuesday, in the hope of jogging the memory of someone who might have seen him.

"He was quite flamboyantly dressed in a red shirt and a light jacket and trousers, and would have stood out alongside commuters in dark suits," said a Surrey Police spokesman.

Ports alerted

Anyone who spots Mr Varga is warned not to approach him but to ring 999.

Ports and airports were alerted after the Hungarian went missing.

He had been allowed to leave Horton Haven, claiming he was visiting friends in Kensington, south London, but did not return in the evening.

He is not believed to be taking his medication and may become violent. He was jailed for stabbing the manager of an employment agency following a disagreement.

Supervision was provided at Horton Haven to ensure he took medication but under the terms of his licence he was free to leave.

Mr Varga is described as white, 5ft 8in tall, and of slim build, clean shaven, with short, receding hair that is grey at the sides, and brown eyes.

When he left Epsom he was carrying three bags: a dark-coloured sports holdall, a black laptop-sized bag and a brown laptop-sized bag.

Because he has absconded, his licence has been revoked and he is now wanted for recall to prison.
