A service of remembrance will be held for members of the armed forces killed during the Northern Ireland Troubles, the government has announced.

Defence Minister Derek Twigg announced the plans to hold the event next year in memory of the 763 service personnel killed in terrorist attacks since 1969.

It will also commemorate the civilians and contractors working for the MoD who were killed.

Mr Twigg said the personnel had contributed greatly to peace.

"The current peace would not exist without their sacrifice and the efforts of over 300,000 military personnel who served in the province as well as the dedicated MoD civilians and contractors who supported them there.

"The service will commemorate all military and defence personnel killed or injured as a result of the situation in Northern Ireland," Mr Twigg said.
