A driver who knocked down an 80-year-old man got out of his car to check on his victim before driving off, police have said. Francis Swift was crossing a road in Irlam O'th Heights, Greater Manchester, when he was hit by a VW Golf. The driver stopped and checked Mr Swift, before driving off. Police say they believe he "panicked" after the collision, on Monday afternoon. Police are questioning two men, and are urging witnesses to come forward. Mr Swift, of Irlam Square, Salford died in hospital after the accident at Bolton Road, Irlam O'th Heights. Friends have described him as "a good man who didn't deserve to die in the way that he did". 'Tragic case' Det Ch Insp Geoff Wessell, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "This is a particularly tragic case which has left an elderly man dead and we are keen to speak to the driver of the car which left the scene. "This may have been an unforeseen event which left the driver panicking, not knowing what to do. "I'd ask him to contact us voluntarily. I can assure you that if you choose not to come forward we will do everything within our power to find you." Police believe the car involved was a black or dark grey VW Golf with a 2002 registration plate. The driver was a white man in his 20s, slim with short shaved hair. |
