The family of a missing student are still waiting for identification of a body found in the church where she had been staying.

Strathclyde Police have yet to identify the body which had been hidden within St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Glasgow's Anderston area.

Angelika Kluk, a 23-year-old Polish student, had been staying at the church since July.

A post mortem is due to be carried out on the body, police have said.

The discovery was made at about 2000 BST on Friday during a detailed search of the church.

'Risk to the public'

Ms Kluk was reported missing on Monday after she had failed to turn up for her job as a cleaner in the city.

She was last seen with the church handyman within the church grounds on Sunday afternoon.

Police said Peter Tobin is on the sex offenders' registerIt has since emerged that the handyman, who the congregation knew as Pat McLaughlin, was in fact convicted sex offender, Peter Tobin, 60.

Tobin, who spoke to police briefly earlier this week, has since vanished.

Detectives are keen to speak to him, stressing that he poses a "potential risk to the public".

The last known address for Tobin, who was jailed in 1994 for raping a 14-year-old girl and indecently assaulting her friend in Hampshire, was in Paisley.

This was Ms Kluk's second summer in Glasgow, having visited Scotland the previous year along with her father and older sister Aneta.

Church closed

On both occasions she stayed at St Patrick's chapel house where priest Father Gerry Nugent operates an "open door policy" for those in need of shelter.

Ms Kluk has a Scottish boyfriend who has been assisting detectives with the investigation.

Officers are still guarding the church entrance and a police cordon has been put in place across the gates to the chapel house where a forensic team are thought to be at work.

A post mortem examination to establish the cause of death is being carried out, but police said they could not determine when the results would be available.
