A man has died following a shooting incident in an East Sussex town, but police say they are not looking for anyone else over the death. A man has died following a shooting in East Sussex, which was witnessed by unarmed police officers called to reports of an intruder.
The victim was taken to hospital suffering from serious injuries after being found at an address in Southover High Street, Lewes. When officers arrived at the address in Southover High Street, Lewes, they were directed to a small courtyard nearby.
The road was closed on Tuesday evening while police investigations were carried out. Police said as they pushed open a gate, a man picked up a rifle. A single shot was fired and he fell to the ground.
A member of the public dialled 999 after hearing a gun being fired. Officers administered first aid, but the man later died in hospital. No-one else is being sought over the shooting.
Unarmed officers went to the scene at about 1920 BST on Tuesday. The victim has not been formally identified, but police said they believed he was a 36-year-old man who was known to a resident at the address.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is to investigate the incident. The road was closed after the incident at 1920 BST while police investigations were carried out.
