Police have been granted more time to question a 16-year-old boy over the shooting of a 12-year-old girl in Greater Manchester.

Kamilah Peniston was shot in the head at a house on Wembley Road, Gorton, on Monday night, and died the following day in hospital.

Greater Manchester Police have until Thursday to question the youth arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police said a handgun was recovered from the address in Gorton.

It had been converted to fire live ammunition.

A police spokeswoman said: "At this stage there is nothing to indicate that this incident is gang-related and officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death."

A gun was recovered from the property at Wembley Road

The shooting happened at a house in a council estate in Gorton at about 1930 BST on Monday.

Kamilah was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary for treatment before being transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury.

She died on Tuesday morning.

Ch Supt John O'Hare told a news conference in Manchester the weapon involved was "powerful".

Gorton lies about four miles (6.4km) outside the centre of Manchester to the east of the city.

Although a poorer and run-down district of the city, the area is not known for gun crime and is currently undergoing regeneration.
