(about 7 hours later)
A 41-year-old man has been charged in connection with a knife attack which left the victim needing almost 200 stitches. A man has been in court charged with a knife attack in west Belfast which left the victim needing nearly 200 stitches to his face and body.
He is expected to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court charged with aggravated burglary and grievous bodily harm. James Valliday, 41, of Agincourt Avenue, south Belfast, denies causing grievous bodily harm to Ciaran McAreavey and using a knife.
The charges related to an attack on a 25-year-old man in the Norglen area of Ballymurphy on 23 March. Mr McAreavey was dragged from his girlfriend's home in the Turf Lodge area by two men and attacked.
One other man has been released pending further inquiries. Mr Valliday was remanded in custody until the end of the month.
Ciaran McAreavey needed a blood transfusion after he was trailed from his west Belfast home by two men. A police constable told Belfast Magistrates Court that she believed she could connect Mr Valliday to the charge.
They forced their way into the house in the Turf Lodge area where he and his girlfriend had been sleeping. Replying to a defence solicitor, the officer confirmed that during police interviews Mr Valliday had totally denied any involvement in the offence.
She said the accused had asked for an ID parade to be held and this had yet to be arranged.
