Tories will 'jail more offenders'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/scotland/6611383.stm Version 0 of 1. Scottish Tory leader Annabel Goldie has set out plans to ensure more criminals spend time in jail. Campaigning outside Glasgow's Barlinnie prison, she claimed countries which jailed more criminals benefited from lower rates of crime. Her party said it would end early release from prison and build an additional jail if they won power. Miss Goldie said of the Tories' policies: "We want prisoners in prison, not convicts in the community." She also highlighted the party's "three strikes and you're out" policy, which would see any person sentenced to their third or more custodial sentence to serve an additional period in jail. "We make no secret of the fact that this policy will require more prison space," added Miss Goldie. "That's why we've set money aside in our budget to build it." She went on: "As part of our biggest assault on crime and drugs ever seen in Scotland, we'll send a clear message that if you are a danger to the public, you'll be in jail." |
