British woman, 52, killed in Goa

A British woman has been found dead with her throat cut at her rented bungalow in India's south-western state of Goa, police have said.

Denise Higgins, 52, from Oxfordshire, had been living in the country for about six months.

A police spokesman from Margao Police station in southern Goa, said Mrs Higgins, a widow, had been killed with her own kitchen knife on Thursday.

A man was arrested at a railway station the following morning.

Waiter arrest

A police spokesman said officers were called by a rickshaw driver who had gone to collect Mrs Higgins to take her shopping on Friday morning.

"He said that the main door was locked so he went to the back door which was slightly open," the spokesman said.

"He found her lying on the floor in the sitting room and there was blood everywhere."

He said the arrested man was a 28-year-old waiter named Anand Kambli.

No sexual motive

Mrs Higgins, a Calcutta-born British national, moved to the popular tourist destination permanently in November last year.

According to police, Mr Kambli's wife and daughter have not been seen since his arrest.

Any sexual motive for the attack had been ruled out.

Mrs Higgins' daughter, who is in her 30s and lives in Britain, was due to fly out to Goa to collect her body.
