Scottish Conservative leader Annabel Goldie has outlined her support for the council tax.

Campaigning in Ayr with shadow chancellor George Osborne, she said the current system was costed, sustainable and "the right idea".

Rival parties have set out plans to replace council tax with an income-based alternative.

But the Tories said halving the tax for Scotland's pensioners was the right way to make a "real difference".

Miss Goldie said their plans did not punish families, adding: "A typical pensioner couple would save almost £600 a year, with single pensioners saving almost £450.

"Scottish Conservatives are taking the message to Scotland's pensioners that we are 'Your Voice in Parliament'."
