Tory call to protect old railways

Disused railway lines should be protected from property developers in case they are needed for future transport routes, the Tories have said.

They want a two-year moratorium on sales, and an inquiry into which lines should be protected for long-term rail needs as towns and cities expand.

The shadow transport secretary, Chris Grayling, said "too many" developments lacked local infrastructure.

Transport systems were "bursting at the seams", he added.

"We want to make sure there is adequate protection for potential public transport routes to help ensure that our towns and cities grow in sustainable ways," Mr Grayling said.

The Conservatives have already said capacity must be boosted on the busiest commuter routes - but from within the existing budget.
