Man denies abduction and assault | |

A man has been in court in Londonderry charged with the abduction and attack on a couple early on Tuesday. | |
In court was Marvin Canning, 45, from Glendara in the Brandywell area. He is the brother-in-law of Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness. | |
He denies kidnapping and false imprisonment of Brendan Cranston and Linda Doherty and causing them grievous bodily harm with intent. | |
He also denied possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life. | |
Both Mr Cranston, 42, and Ms Doherty, 38, were assaulted during the incident and Mr Cranston was also shot in both ankles. | |
They had been abducted on Monday night and brought to Derry from Mullingar in County Westmeath. | |
They were found injured in High Park in the Creggan area on Tuesday. | |
'Identification' | |
A detective constable said he believed he could connect Mr Canning to the offences. | |
He confirmed the accused denied any involvement during seven police interviews. | |
The detective said that evidence against him was of an "identification nature." | |
Mr Canning was remanded in custody until 24 May. |
