Version 0 of 1.

The sister of journalist Alan Johnston has joined BBC Scotland staff to mark six weeks since the 44-year-old was seized at gunpoint in Gaza.

Katriona Johnston joined more than 100 staff outside Broadcasting House in Glasgow with vigils also held at BBC offices across Scotland.

Mr Johnston, who is originally from Scotland, has not been seen since he was seized on 12 March.

A multi-faith service was held in London and called for his safe return.

People from different religious communities gathered for the vigil at St Martin in the Fields.

Family comfort

BBC Deputy Director General, Mark Byford, told the congregation that Mr Johnston was a "remarkable and courageous" journalist who was "driven by truth".

He added: "No-one is braver or has faced more hardship than Alan Johnston."

At the Glasgow vigil, BBC Scotland Controller Ken MacQuarrie said: "Our thoughts continue to be with Alan and his family."

He thanked Ms Johnston for attending and said: "I know Katriona takes great comfort from the support of Alan's colleagues here in Scotland and she will convey that support to the rest of the family."

Those gathered also heard from James Docherty, vice-president of the National Union of Journalists, who urged staff to use all means to keep the pressure on to secure Mr Johnston's release.
