Man charged with child abduction

A man has been charged with the attempted abduction of a two-year-old girl from her mother in Southampton.

Michael David Hearn, 53, of Vanguard Road, Southampton, was charged with attempted child abduction and assault inflicting actual bodily harm.

It follows an incident in Bitterne precinct at lunchtime on Friday after a man approached a 21-year-old mother.

Mr Hearn was remanded in custody to appear before Southampton magistrates on Monday morning.

Police said shoppers intervened when a man tried to remove a girl from a pushchair before running away.
