The Rates Collection Agency has been criticised for giving confusing information over rates relief, by the Alliance Party.

It followed the publication of a leaflet which incorrectly informed people they were entitled to more rates relief than the Agency intends to give.

Deputy Leader Naomi Long believes the error will have created "financial hardship" for many.

But Alan Bronte of the RCA said people would receive correct billing.

The leaflet's aim was to assist people during the change in the rates system from rental values to capital values.

However, speaking on BBC Radio Ulster's Nolan Show Mrs Long said the mis-calculation of rates relief on the leaflet would lead to many people being out of pocket.

'Serious mistake'

"I am very annoyed at the serious mistake made by the RCA," said Mrs Long.

"Their blunder has left many people, who budgeted according to information given on their leaflet, out of pocket.

"I am stunned that such a massive error has been made on this vitally important issue."

Financial assistance

She claims that many people on low incomes are set to receive several hundred pounds less relief than they were told they would get.

However, although Alan Bronte of the RCA admitted there was "a small textual error" in the leaflet, he said that the bills people would receive reflected the relief they were entitled to.

"I can assure people, this morning, that the bill they are getting through their door perfectly reflects the relief that the government has decided that people should get," he added.
