Ms Gentles of Lenzie, East Dunbartionshire, was on the Virginia Tech campus at the time of the shootings but was not involved in the incident.
The keen athlete's parents Jim and Alison Gentles have been able to make contact with their daughter.
In a statement released by Strathclyde University, Mr Gentles said his daughter was outside training when the first incident took place and in lectures at the time of the main incident.
"As her class came to a close, police prevented students from going near the affected building," he said.
"She doesn't think she knows any of the students who were shot but at this stage we are waiting for the full information.
