A 14-year-old boy has been shot in the neck in a drive-by shooting incident in east London, police said.

The teenager was standing outside a closed shop with friends in Barking Road, Plaistow, when shots were fired from a car with blacked-out windows.

The incident happened at 2330 BST on Thursday. The boy was treated in hospital and discharged on Friday.

Police said they are keeping an open mind about the motive and have appealed to the local community for information.

Police believe the vehicle from which the shots were fired is a red Citroen Saxo.

Detective Inspector Simon Stancombe, from Operation Trident (north), said: "We need help and support from the local community to assist us to continue the removal of firearms from our streets."

Police in London are already investigating the deaths of six male teenagers who have died within the last two months.
