A Polish man has been charged with the attempted murder of an Exeter woman after being extradited to the UK.

The 48-year-old mother from Exeter was attacked in July 2006. She remains critically ill in hospital with serious head injuries.

The 24-year-old Polish national was arrested in Poznan on 9 February under a European arrest warrant.

He was detained by police on arrival at Heathrow Airport and is due to appear before Exeter Magistrates.

He failed in an appeal against a Poznan court ruling that he could be extradited to the UK.

The victim was found lying in the street in Redlands Close in Exeter after a night out with a friend.
