A controlled explosion has been carried out at a house in north Manchester after a live hand grenade was discovered in the back garden.

An Army bomb disposal unit successfully disposed of the device in the Blackley area of the city at 2023 BST.

Around 60 residents from nearby homes who had been evacuated have been allowed to return home.

Police said they had been alerted at approximately 1500 BST about the grenade, which did not contain a pin.

A 200m cordon had been in force around the scene on Whitemoss Road.
