Police reject Prescott allegation

John Prescott will not face a criminal probe into claims he broke anti corruption laws following his stay at a US tycoon's ranch, Scotland Yard says.

The deputy PM came under fire for his links with Philip Anschutz, who is bidding to open the UK's first and only super-casino at the Millennium Dome.

Mr Prescott strongly denied there was a conflict of interest, saying he was not involved in decisions about the Dome.

Police say there is "not sufficient basis" for a criminal investigation.

The investigation followed complaints made to Scotland Yard by Windsor-based businessman George Bathurst and Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker.

These were that the deputy prime minister may have breached the 1906 and 1916 Prevention of Corruption Acts by accepting hospitality from Mr Anschutz.

The deputy prime minister has always denied any wrong doing and said it was right he met Mr Anschutz, someone whose regeneration in east London was creating jobs and homes.
