Security at Scotland's main airports is to be improved at a cost of £12m, BAA Scotland has announced.

New security officers are to be recruited and extra X-ray equipment is to be installed at Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports.

Screening facilities will also be improved under the two-year package.

The BAA Scotland investment is aimed at speeding up the screening process following the UK Government's decision last year to tighten airport security.

Stephen Baxter, divisional managing director of BAA Scotland, said the investment reflected the company's aim to reduce security waiting times and improve the flow of passengers.

"It is clear that the heightened restrictions introduced last year are long term in nature and that, having already absorbed additional costs over the past few months, we must also make increased provision for security in our future plans," he said.

"We have responded to that challenge, not by seeking additional resources from elsewhere, but by providing this necessary investment from our own funds, at no cost to the taxpayer."
