Antrim SDLP councillor Thomas Burns said the robbery raised great safety concerns for people who legally own firearms.
"This must have been an extremely traumatic experience for the family as an armed gang came into their house," he said.
"On a day when the peace process was moving forward, this attack shows that there are still armed men instilling fear in our community."
