Tayside Police have turned to the internet in a bid to trace a Perthshire man who disappeared seven years ago.

Adam Alexander, from Errol, failed to keep an appointment at his home on 14 November 1999 and has not been seen since.

Police are using the popular internet site MySpace to appeal for information about Mr Alexander and are hoping it will produce fresh leads.

They said his disappearance was out of character and remains a mystery.

It is thought to be the first time in Scotland a police force have used such a site for a missing person's inquiry.

Although years have elapsed since he was last seen we are doing all we can Det Ch Insp Roddy Ross

The internet page includes photographs and a profile of Mr Alexander, details of his disappearance and a link to Tayside Police.

Renewing the appeal for information on Tuesday, Mr Alexander's 46th birthday, Det Ch Insp Roddy Ross said: "We were aware of another case in which a missing person had a website created for him by some of his friends.

"It appeared to generate a lot of information and we thought it might be worthwhile to do this with Mr Alexander."

At the time of his disappearance, Mr Alexander, a lorry driver, was selling his motorbike and had arranged to meet the buyer at his home around 1700 GMT on 14 November.

He failed to return home and has not been seen since.

Mr Alexander's car - a black Volvo 440 - was seen in a number of locations close to Perth Royal Infirmary in the days after he disappeared.

Police later recovered the vehicle.

Det Ch Insp Ross added: "We are keeping an open mind on the cause of Adam's disappearance.

Pale complexion

"Although years have elapsed since he was last seen we are doing all we can to try and find the answer to the question: what did happen to Adam?"

Mr Alexander, who spent time in the Lanarkshire area, is described as being 5ft 10in. When he went missing he was of stocky build and had a pale complexion, brown eyes and cropped brown hair.

He had tattoos on both arm, the one on his left arm bearing the name "Evelyn".
