The mother of a six-year-old Londonderry boy attacked by a stray dog has said she feared he could have been killed.

Lisa Quigley said her son, Leon McDaid, had gone out to play when he was attacked by a mongrel.

She has called for more to be done about stray dogs after the vicious attack which left him traumatised.

She said that witnesses had told her he had been tossed about like a rag-doll before a window cleaner rescued him.

"There was an actual chunk taken out of his arm," she said.

"He's badly bruised everywhere, bitten on the back of the neck, on the back of the head, ear, his nose is broken there were a lot of injuries and a lot of bruising everywhere .

"He was totally shocked, for two days he didn't talk."

Leon is now terrified of dogs and is reluctant to venture out.

"I'm never going out, I'm never going near a dog again, I'm never going out to play," he said.

The family paid tribute to the work of the city's dog wardens, but said that more needs to be done before another child is injured.
