Bangladesh coup army officer held

A former Bangladeshi army officer wanted in connection with the military coup in the country in 1975 has been arrested in the United States.

Mohiuddin AKM Ahmed has been convicted and sentenced to death in his absence for his role in the coup.

The coup had led to the assassination of Bangladesh's first president Sheikh Mujib-ur-Rahman, and the ouster of the Awami League government.

Mr Ahmed first went to the US in 1996, and applied to stay there permanently.

But he was ordered to be deported in 2002, and an appeals court last month rejected his bid to have his case reviewed.

The US authorities will now begin proceedings to return him to Bangladesh.
