At least 18 people have been killed and another 28 injured in a bus crash in northern India, police have said.

The bus was carrying wedding guests when the accident happened in the hill state of Uttarakhand.

A police official said the bus plunged into a ravine when the road caved in after landslides in the area.

Road accidents claim hundreds of lives every year in India. Most of the accidents are blamed on reckless driving, old vehicles and poor roads.

Senior police official VP Singh told the Press Trust of India news agency the driver had parked the vehicle on a road after heavy rain in the area had triggered landslides.

But a part of the road suddenly gave way and the bus fell about 60ft (180m) into a ravine.

It was not clear whether the bride and the groom were among the dead.
