Two candidates standing in Northern Ireland's assembly elections have said they have been sent bullets in the post.

Sinn Fein's Billy Leonard and independent republican candidate Davy Hyland said they received the bullets on Tuesday.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesman would not disclose any details.

"We do not discuss the personal security of individuals," he said.

"However, if we receive information that somone's life may be put at risk, we take steps to inform them. We never, ever ignore anything that would put someone's life at risk."
