At least 21 people have been killed and 10 others injured after a fire swept through a slum in Bangladesh's port city of Chittagong, police said.

Firefighters put out the blaze that gutted nearly 100 brick-and-tin huts in the city's Bakulia area after a four-hour battle.

Rescuers found the bodies of 10 children, eight women and three men, a police official told AP.

It is not clear what caused the blaze, and police are investigating.

Police official Nuruzzaman said most of the victims were sleeping when the fire broke out in the Boubazar slum in the south-eastern port city early on Tuesday.

A 50-year-old slum resident Abdul Momen said his wife, three daughters and two sons had been burnt to death.

"I woke up to hear many people screaming for help. I rushed out to see what happened. But when I returned to my hut it was gone in the fire. What I have found now are the bodies of my wife and children," he said.

"It seems Allah has punished me. But for what?"

The police said the investigating the possible cause of fire.

Last month, at least two people died and more than 50 injured after fire swept through a multi-storey building in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.
