At least seven soldiers and 11 left-wing guerrillas have been killed in the heaviest fighting in Colombia in recent months, the military says.

A military commander said there was evidence more than 11 rebels had been killed in the battle in the central province of Meta.

President Alvaro Uribe has vowed to retake areas once controlled by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

State forces have been involved in a battle with the Farc for four decades.

Other left-wing rebel groups and right-wing paramilitary forces are also part of the conflict, which has killed tens of thousands of civilians and displaced hundreds of thousands.
