Officers launch city murder probe Man murdered breaking up fight

A murder inquiry has begun after the death of a 40-year-old man in the east end of Glasgow. A 40-year-old man was stabbed to death when he tried to break up youths during what police described as a disturbance.
The man was found seriously injured in Easterhouse Road just after 2230 BST on Saturday following what police described as "an altercation". John Purcell, of Millennium Gardens, Easterhouse was attacked at about 2235 BST on Saturday as he walked home. He died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
He died a short time later at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Det Insp Tom Docherty said: The community are shocked. Mr Purcell was trying to do the neighbourly thing and disperse youths."
Police said there was an altercation in Easterhouse Road before the attack.
An incident room has been set up at Easterhouse police office.

Officers investigating the Easterhouse death said their inquiry was at an early stage and they have appealed for witnesses. Police said the victim was attacked as he got out of his car near his home in Allanton Drive at about 0030 BST on Sunday.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that the man had been murdered and an incident room has been set up at Easterhouse Police Office.

Detective Sergeant David Wagstaff said: "This was a totally unprovoked attack which has left the 41 year-old man seriously injured."
