A man was arrested after two adults and two children died in a crash on the A1 in North Yorkshire.

Five other people were hurt in the crash, close to the village of Kirkby Fleetham, on Saturday.

An eight-year-old boy was taken to James Cook Memorial hospital on Teesside by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Both carriageways were closed as police attended the scene between the A66 junction and Leeming Bar.

All four fatalities were in a Citroen Saxo which was travelling south on the trunk route.

Police said this car and a Ford Transit van were involved in the crash.

Insp Nigel Slater added: "We can confirm that, unfortunately, there are four fatalities from one of the vehicles, a Citroen Saxo.

"They were two adults and two children."

Police investigations at the scene are continuing.
