Its understood the accident involved a car and a van, both travelling south. Police said a Citroen Saxo car and a Ford Transit van were involved.
Inspector Nigel Slater, of North Yorkshire Police, said the road would remain closed as investigations continue.
Officers want to hear from witnesses who saw the vehicles, which were both travelling on the southbound carriageway.
