Gaza militant dies in air strike Gaza militant dies in air strike
(about 1 hour later)
An Israeli air strike has killed one and injured three in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, Palestinian medics said. An Israeli air strike has killed one Palestinian militant and injured three others in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, Palestinian and Israeli officials say.
Israel's military confirmed the attack was made near the central Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis. They said the attack was carried out near the southern town of Khan Younis.
Reports suggest the person killed was a member of a Palestinian militant group. Israel's military and Palestinian medics say the targeted men were from the Popular Resistance Committee group.
One of those injured is reported to be in a critical condition in hospital, according to the head of Gaza's emergency services. The death was the first of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict this year. Israeli raids killed six suspected militants in Gaza and the West Bank last month.
The death was the first of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict this year. There has been a sharp drop in the number of rockets being fired out of Gaza into Israel since Israel launched a large-scale offensive in Gaza in 2008.
Air strikes and instances of rocket fire across the border have decreased since Israeli forces launched a large-scale offensive in Gaza at the end of 2008. But in recent weeks the number of rocket attacks has increased, as has the frequency of Israeli air strikes, the BBC's Jon Donnison in Ramallah reports.
Israel killed six militants in two separate incidents in Gaza and the occupied West Bank late in December 2009. The Popular Resistance Committee group apparently targeted in Tuesday's strike has close ties to Hamas, the Palestinian faction which runs the Gaza Strip, our correspondent adds.
