Central Scotland Police said the ambulance was not on an emergency call when it struck the man's body. The ambulance crew, who were transferring a patient to hosptal, felt a thump and got out to investigate.
A spokesman for Central Scotland Police said: "A car was seen in the area at the time, parked at the side of the road with hazard warning lights in operation. They found the body of a young man in the road and tried to administer first aid.
"The car then drove off as the ambulance approached. The ambulance then struck the man's body." Another ambulance was called but the man was already dead.
Road closure
The police want to speak to anyone who was in the car spotted nearby.
A spokesman said the investigation was at a very early stage and it was still too early to say what exactly happened.
The road was closed to motorists to allow a full accident investigation to be conducted. The closure is effective between the villages of Plean and Torwood.
