Green protesters in airport demo Airport demo protesters arrested
(about 4 hours later)
More than 20 environmental activists are staging a protest at Nottingham East Midlands Airport after breaching security. Police have arrested 21 protesters who broke through a security gate at Nottingham East Midlands Airport.
A campaign group, which says it is from a green camp at Drax power station in North Yorkshire, occupied an airport taxiway early on Sunday. Members of an environmental campaign group used cutters to gain access through a fence. The airport said six outbound flights were delayed.
The group was said to be holding a ceremony in memory of those "who have died as a result of climate change". The group, which called itself Plane Stupid, had claimed the number of short-haul flights from the airport was affecting climate change.
An airport spokesman said flights were not being disrupted. Managers at the airport condemned the protest as "irresponsible".
Peaceful protest The protest lasted for about five hours. The campaigners sat on a taxiway between two cargo holds. Baptist Minister Rev Malcolm Carroll led a ceremony in memory of those "who have died as a result of climate change."
The airport said police were working to restore law and order. The group was said to be part of the wider Climate Camp organisation, responsible for the recent protests at Drax power station in north Yorkshire.

Airport spokesman Ryan Martinez said the group was staging a peaceful protest and the airport was operating as normal.
"There are a group of 21 protesters who have breached our security," he said. "The police are obviously with them but it is peaceful."
The group, which calls itself Plane Stupid, scaled the airport's perimeter fence shortly before 0700 BST.
