Emergency service workers called to the fire, which began at 1000 BST, were said to be "horrified". "The three-year-old boy is currently being treated for smoke inhalation at Peterborough District Hospital. He is described as being in a stable condition," she said.
Police said the two adults and the child were being supported and comforted by officers. "The man and woman, who are the children's parents, did not require hospital treatment.
"They are currently staying with friends in the Peterborough area and are being supported by police family liaison officers," she added.
Det Insp Dave Murphy said police were working to establish the cause of the fire, which began at about 1000 BST, though it was not thought to be suspicious.
"Police and fire officers at the scene yesterday were visibly upset, but all our thoughts are of course with the family of those involved," he said.
Post-mortem examinations are due to be carried out on Monday.
