Coventry's £113m Ricoh Arena complex has had its official opening.

Britain's double Olympic gold medallist at the 2004 Athens games, Dame Kelly Holmes, and Minister for Sport Richard Caborn went to the venue on Saturday.

A weekend of events, including a women's football match, has been arranged to mark the official opening.

The home of Coventry City Football Club is also a concert venue and has conference, banqueting, exhibition and hotel facilities.

Dame Kelly Holmes said: "Having a great facility like this is giving it more chance (of) having some major sporting events... which is going to then inspire people to take up sport."

Saturday's official opening took place as Coventry City were playing at Norwich, where they drew 1-1 in the Championship.
