Police have issued a UK-wide appeal as they search for the car owned by a man who was murdered in Aberdeen.

The Grampian force has also released a picture of the dark blue BMW 3 Series car, registration D10 RJM, which belonged to 57-year-old Robert Mair.

Police said finding the car was essential to the murder inquiry.

The father-of-two's body was found in a house in Kettlehills Crescent on Wednesday. More than 60 officers are hunting his killer.

Det Supt Alan Smith, who is heading the investigation, said local appeals for information about the car had been unsuccessful.

Whatever has happened to it, somebody will have seen it or been approached to buy or even scrap it Det Supt Alan Smith

He said he thought the vehicle may have been taken elsewhere in Scotland or south of the border.

"Finding what has happened to this car is essential to the progress of our inquiry," he said.

"It may have been sold on or disposed of. Whatever has happened to it, somebody will have seen it or been approached to buy or even scrap it.

"I am appealing to the public, car dealers, petrol stations and scrap dealers across Scotland and beyond to let us know if they have seen this car or been asked to buy it."

Police have also renewed an appeal for information about Mr Mair's movements prior to his death.

It is thought that his body may have lain undiscovered for some weeks.
