Thousands join anti-war protest

Thousands of people have taken part in a march in London calling for the withdrawal of British troops from Iraq.

Some 60,000 joined the march from Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square, according to organisers. Metropolitan Police put the figure at 10,000.

The rally, organised by Stop the War Coalition, was supported by CND and British Muslim Initiative.

On Friday relatives of soldiers killed in Iraq set up camp outside Downing Street to protest against the war.

Protesters also warned the government against attacking Iran and opposed the replacement for the Trident nuclear missile system.

Stop the War Coalition activist Lindsey German said: "We know that many people are coming to the view that the government is addicted to war.

"There could be some (troops) withdrawn from Iraq, but there are more in Afghanistan."

A demonstration was also held in Glasgow, where there were calls to stop the Trident replacement.
