Village in tribute to war fallen
(1 day later) | |
A war memorial has been unveiled in one of the few remaining Scottish communities never to have had one.
The memorial in Cowie, Stirlingshire, was marked by a well-attended ceremony and a march by representatives of the armed forces through the village.
The tribute was the result of work done by local resident Willie Stevenson, who spent more than a year researching World War I and World War II.
Mr Stevenson has also compiled a book about the fallen war heroes of Cowie. | Mr Stevenson has also compiled a book about the fallen war heroes of Cowie. |
He was joined in the venture by Cowie War Memorial Research Group and the project includes a children's peace memorial.
Battle of Loos | |
The large celtic cross carries the names of the 75 war dead of the area.
It bears the words: "In remembrance of the men of Cowie and district who made the ultimate sacrifice in the two World Wars. They gave all their tomorrows for our today. We will remember them."
I am just thrilled that we have made it this far and that Cowie's war dead have a memorial that they would be proud of Willie Stevenson
Mr Stevenson was joined at the unveiling by the Lord Lieutenant of Stirling and Falkirk, Marjory McLachlan and the Stirling Lord Provost Colin O'Brien.
The date was selected as it was the nearest to the anniversary of the Battle of Loos on 25-26 September, 1915, when six men from Cowie were killed.
Mr Stevenson said: "This has become a project very close to my heart. When I started the research I never believed that we would get to this stage, the help and generosity that we have received has been quite incredible.
