A driver has fallen to his death after crashing through a Tokyo bridge, leaving his 24-ton lorry dangling above traffic some 10m (33ft) below. Japanese police said the vehicle careered through the side of the bridge on the Metropolitan Expressway after the driver mishandled a curve. Kyodo news agency named the dead man as 32-year-old Shinobu Sawaguchi. Rescue personnel went to the scene and police sealed off the road before the truck was removed after several hours. Debris, plasterboard and fragments of glass were scattered onto the road which runs underneath the elevated section of the expressway where the accident happened. The truck came to rest upside down on one of the bridge's supporting pillars. "I heard a big bang," an unnamed eyewitness told Japan's Mainichi Daily News. "If the vehicle had fallen on the road below, it would have been a disaster." |
