Arsonists have struck twice at the same school on one night, say North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire crews were called out on two occasions on Friday to put out blazes in a bin compound at Ysgol y Gaer, Gweryllt, Wrexham.

Phil Owen, Wrexham's safety manager, said such fires were "extremely worrying" for the service.

He said they committed "valuable resources... which could be needed for life saving at other incidents."

"These fires are putting the lives of the individuals who start them, the public and the firefighters at risk," he said.

"There are also huge cost implications with these incidents and if this fire would have spread to the school it would have caused a great disruption to the children's education."

The first fire, at Ysgol Gwynedd, Flint, was in a mobile classroom on Friday, 9 February, and the second six days later left part of the school smoke-logged and damaged a notice board.
