Scott Harman, 24, of Highfield Road, near Heathfield, pleaded not guilty at Lewes Crown Court to the manslaughter of Jessica Harman.

Jessica was nearly eight months old when she died in April 2004. A post-mortem examination revealed she had 15 fractures and a head injury.

Mr Harman denied three further counts of child cruelty. He was bailed until 9 July when he is expected to face trial.

Jessica died at Eastbourne District General Hospital after attempts to resuscitate her failed.

An inquest into her death was later adjourned by East Sussex coroner Alan Craze.
