The Police Service of Northern Ireland said it was conducting an investigation into "allegations of inappropriate behaviour between patients at Muckamore Abbey Hospital more than 20 years ago".
The investigation, by members of the police Care (Child Abuse and Rape Enquiry) unit, was started when the PSNI was contacted by the North and West Belfast Trust and Eastern Health and Social Services Board.
"Police inquiries into this difficult and sensitive case will be progressed as fully and quickly as possible."
